Money-saving tips for cheer competition weekends, including advice on staying off-property, using Scrip gift cards, and cooking meals to cut costs during events like The Summit or Worlds

10 Smart Ways Cheer Families Can Save Money at Bid Events

Did your athlete's team get a bid to a post-season event? Congratulations! Competing at events like Summit and Worlds is the ultimate cheerleading dream, but as the adult planning to attend those events... yikes. (The package costs HOW MUCH?! Are you #!&%ing kidding me?)

Post-season weekends are thrilling and exhausting—and let’s be real—absurdly expensive. Between flights, hotels, meals, and that “must-have” competition merch, it’s easy to feel like your wallet is doing backflips before you even leave home. But fear not! With some savvy planning and a pinch of flexibility, you can save big without sacrificing the fun. Let’s dive into the best money-saving tips for post-season bid events.

1. Stay Off-Property vs. On-Property

For events like Worlds and Summit, you will have the option to book a package that includes your hotel, entry to the ESPN facilities, and multi-day park hopper tickets for Disney World. Perks like shuttles and extended park hours are tempting, but they often come with a hefty price tag. At one event last year, we hardly used the park hopper tickets that came with our package and it felt like a huge waste of money. Which option is right for you and your family?

On-Property: Great if convenience is your love language (or if you like throwing money around). Just remember, you’re paying a premium for that proximity.

Off-Property: Staying a little farther out can save you hundreds of dollars. Look for nearby hotels or vacation rentals with good reviews and decent parking. Bonus: you’ll have an excuse to escape the crowds at the end of the day (shoutout to my fellow introverts).

2. Rent an Airbnb with a Group

Why book a tiny, overpriced hotel room when you could share an entire home with other cheer families? Splitting the cost of a rental house—and maybe even a rental car—can make a big difference. Plus, it’s way more fun to bond over late-night pizza while your kids practice their dance in the living room.

3. Book Rental Cars Through Costco

Costco isn’t just for bulk snacks—it’s also a goldmine for rental car deals. Members can score great discounts and perks like free additional drivers. Book early to lock in a good rate before prices skyrocket.

4. Cook Your Own Meals

Eating out every meal? Your wallet (and waistband) will feel the impact. Save big by cooking your own food:

In a Rental House: Stock up on groceries and whip up simple, crowd-pleasing dishes like spaghetti or taco night. You’ll spend less and avoid the “where do we eat?” debate.

In a Hotel: Bring a crockpot or air fryer and become a hotel-room chef extraordinaire. Chili, soups, or pulled pork—your options are endless and delicious. Make sure your hotel room has a refrigerator when you're booking so you can make the most out of your cooking and save the leftovers. You'll also want to pack utensils and food storage containers!

No matter where you are staying, you'll also want to pack your own snacks for the venue so you’re not stuck paying $10 for a pretzel that tastes like regret.

5. Carpool or Share Transportation Costs

Coordinate with other families to carpool or share rides. Whether it’s splitting gas costs or sharing an Uber, every little bit helps. Plus, carpool karaoke is way more fun with a squad.

6. Plan Ahead for Souvenirs

Competition merch is cute, but it’s also ridiculously overpriced. Set a souvenir budget before the trip and stick to it--make sure to talk to your athlete about it beforehand so their expectations are in line with reality. Better yet, grab custom cheer-themed goodies ahead of time from your favorite cheer vendor (we love our gift section, but you can find tons of other options online). They’re often cheaper, cuter, and more unique than what you’ll find on-site!

7. Avoid Last-Minute Booking

Procrastination costs money. Whether it’s flights, hotels, or rental cars, booking early usually means better deals. Many hotels and rentals offer refundable options, so lock something in as soon as your team gets a bid.

8. Leverage Credit Card Rewards

Been hoarding those travel rewards points like a dragon guarding treasure? Now’s the time to cash them in. Use points for flights, hotels, or rental cars to make your trip more affordable. Focus on simple rewards strategies—no need to go full spreadsheet ninja (although if that's your jam, we should totally be friends).

9. Pack Smart

Overpacking = extra baggage fees, but underpacking = buying expensive sunscreen in the gift shop. Make a checklist of essentials and stick to it. Bring reusable water bottles, portable chargers, and basic first-aid supplies to avoid overpriced purchases on-site. Also, don’t forget that one crucial item—your cheerleader’s uniform. Yes, it’s happened before.

10. Take Advantage of Discounts

AAA, military discounts, and gym partnerships can all help shave dollars off your trip. Some events even offer discount codes for local attractions or dining, so keep an eye out.

Final Thoughts

Post-season events are the cherry on top of your cheerleader’s hard work, but they don’t have to leave you eating ramen for a month. With a little planning, teamwork, and flexibility, you can make these competition weekends memorable without maxing out your credit cards. Now go forth and save like the cheer rockstar you are!

Cheers-
